About GST

What is GST in India?

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a unified indirect tax that replaced multiple central and state taxes in India, effective July 2017.

📋

What is CGST?

Central GST collected by the Central Government on intra-state transactions. Always equal to SGST — each is half the total GST rate.

🏛️

What is SGST?

State GST collected by the State Government for transactions within the same state. Equal to CGST — both split the GST rate 50/50.

🔄

What is IGST?

Integrated GST applied on inter-state transactions and imports. Collected by the Central Government and shared between Centre and State.

Add vs Remove GST

Add GST: You know the base price and want to find the total price including GST.
Remove GST: You know the GST-inclusive price and want to find the base price.

28% Luxury & Sin Goods Cars, tobacco, aerated drinks, luxury hotels (₹7.5K+), pan masala, 5-star restaurants

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about GST calculation in India.

To add GST: GST Amount = Base Price × GST Rate ÷ 100. Total = Base Price + GST Amount.
To remove GST: Base Price = Total Price ÷ (1 + GST Rate ÷ 100). GST Amount = Total − Base Price.

Both CGST and SGST apply on intra-state (within the same state) transactions. CGST goes to the Central Government and SGST to the State Government. Each is exactly half the total GST rate. For example, on 18% GST, CGST = 9% and SGST = 9%.

IGST (Integrated GST) is applied on inter-state transactions — when goods or services move from one state to another — as well as on imports. In this case, only IGST is charged at the full GST rate, not CGST + SGST.

No. Some items are exempt from GST such as fresh vegetables, milk, eggs, healthcare services, and educational services. Petroleum products and alcohol for human consumption are also outside GST and taxed separately by states.

Most services attract 18% GST. However, some services like healthcare and education are exempt, while others like insurance and telecom are at 18%, restaurants at 5% or 18% depending on the type, and luxury hotels at 28%.
